~Process Pictures & Paperwork~
Loading in the show at the Jewel 2 Blackbox Theater. Hanging 2x EAW Speakers, while also working around lighting.
Giving Tech Notes to the Stage Management Team, and talking through some of the problems that we encountered that day.
Shared Cue Sheet between myself and my co-sound designer, Rory Shea. We used the "System" column to indicate whether the sound was coming out of "Sound System A" (the in-house mains) or "Sound System B" (the outside of the bunker walls speakers. We also used red text to indicate what aspects of the design still needed work throughout the process.
Plot drafted by myself to give an idea of space to the design team. We wound up using two isolated sound systems (due to restraints with QLab free) in order to make this sound system work with an "inside" speaker system and an "outside" speaker system.
~ Remarks~
The director's vision of the show included a world where the play Three Sisters is being performed by war refugees in a modern-day bunker. This meant that we opened the story up to many modern elements and design choices. The one that I remember most vividly is the opening "phone montage" - which included using the actors' phones in the intimate black-box space in order to bring in modern-day news clips localizing from their phone speakers. Other key points of the design revolved around this idea of a "Sound System A" and a "Sound System B". Because there is a war happening outside of this bunker, it felt essential to have sounds of war coming from outside of the bunker door. So having an isolated speaker out there was a must to telling the story - as well as having mains from the "stage" to help tell the impressionistic moments on stage. All of this could not have been possible without the help of co-designer Rory Shea, we truly tackled all aspects of this production together.
